How Do Experts Differ from Novices?

This volume, which came out 20 years ago, is quite interesting on both the question in the title and on what it means to really understand something that you've learned.  The answer is transfer - you can apply the concepts in a novel setting, unlike where you first learned the concept. We really should practice transfer a lot, but I'm afraid it doesn't happen that often in current undergraduate education.
